The geographic boundaries of Petworth are not as firmly established as those of obviously circumscribed neighborhoods such as Riggs Park or Trinidad. While the PETWORTHIES maintain an expansionary outlook, for the purposes of this blog, we will allow that Petworth is wholly confined within Ward 4. Georgia Avenue is fixed as Petworth’s western boundary, but we have hopes of pushing our sunset horizon to 14th Street. To the north, we are penned in at around Missouri Avenue, although some put our northern edge at Kennedy Street. The eastern boundary is, and will ever remain North Capitol. We see considerable opportunity to expand south past Rock Creek Church Road to annex the U.S. Soldiers and Airmen’s Home Golf Course, which is overdue for conversion to a public park.
However, if you are idly searching on Google for news of our verdant neighborhood, you will find at its beating heart the house at 4161 9th St. NW. It’s a humble example of the Wardman-style row home — yellow brick, elevated first floor and a modest front yard. There are some unusual features — the red brick stairs, the gated yard and an awning extending over the front porch — but it is as good a default choice as any we could supply. —Adam Mazmanian
